Responses to American Poetry

The aim of this online space is to host the research work of university students or young scholars as this emerges from larger projects focusing on the American poetry scene. The objective of this initiative is to bring this kind of research activity to the attention of the general public in an attempt to further promote the exchange of ideas with regard to the process of reading, understanding and appreciating poetry writing.

Hearing Whitman Singing Creativity: Poiesis in Motion

This year’s project, falling under the aegis of the Poiesis in Motion  initiative, has focused on the impact of a major American poet, that  of Walt Whitman.

All contributors - scholars and students (undergraduate and  postgraduate) - have gathered together from various institutions in  Greece (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), the U.S. (Stockton University,  University of North Dakota) and Bangladesh (BRAC University) in order  to exchange ideas, engage in fruitful dialogue and be creatively  motivated in their attempt to approach Whitman’s verses through their  own personal lens.

This whole endeavor has led to the creation of a number of creative  responses taking the form of poetry, prose, essay, video, multimedia,  and art as each one of the contributors has attempted to discover as well as formulate her/his/their vision via the words, imagery and  verses of a 19th century poetry voice.

Starting with the introductory vignettes and moving to all the pieces  included in the current project, one can appreciate the diachronic,  cross- and trans-cultural impact Whitman still has on contemporary readers worldwide.

Hope you enjoy this year’s intermedial contributions, with each one of  them offering a unique insight into the creators’ inner voice and  creative dynamism.
