Responses to American Poetry

The aim of this online space is to host the research work of university students or young scholars as this emerges from larger projects focusing on the American poetry scene. The objective of this initiative is to bring this kind of research activity to the attention of the general public in an attempt to further promote the exchange of ideas with regard to the process of reading, understanding and appreciating poetry writing.

H.D. and Sappho Revisited: Poiesis in Motion

The project presented here developed as part of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Greece, and Stockton University, U.S., bilateral agreement.

It has attempted to bring together a number of scholar and student voices (undergraduate and graduate) from various institutions such as AUTh, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Stockton University, University of Ioannina, University of North Dakota, and University of Michigan.

The aim of the project has been to invite both Greek and international participants to respond to the work of Sappho and explore what her work means to them today through their own creative conceptualizations.

Also, the participants have been encouraged to encounter Sappho’s work through the work of other American writers and artists as is the case of the modernist Hilda Doolittle (H.D.).

For your orientation through this project, you’re invited to start by reading the two introductory texts that set the context of the particular project. They serve as vignettes in an effort to transfer to us Vassiliki Misiou’s and Liana Sakelliou’s insights into the creative process of rewriting or translating creatively an author’s work.

You can then access each contributor’s creative project that constitutes their own original composition followed up by a reflective response.

Each creative piece constitutes a response to Sappho’s work approached in an intermedial manner with original creative writing practice conversing with music, photography, paintings, hypertext and video.

We hope you enjoy this cross-cultural endeavor.

Αναψηλαφώντας την H.D. και τη Σαπφώ: Μετα-ποίησις

Το παρόν πρότζεκτ γεννήθηκε στο πλαίσιο της διμερούς συμφωνίας επιστημονικής συνεργασίας μεταξύ του Αριστοτέλειου Πανεπιστήμιου Θεσσαλονίκης (Α.Π.Θ.) και του Stockton University, ΗΠΑ.

Στόχος του πρότζεκτ ήταν η ενθάρρυνση της συνεργασίας και η ενίσχυση της επαφής του διδακτικού προσωπικού και των φοιτητ(ρι)ών (προπτυχιακού και μεταπτυχιακού κύκλου σπουδών) από διάφορα πανεπιστημιακά ιδρύματα, όπως το Α.Π.Θ., το Εθνικό και Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών, το Stockton University, το Πανεπιστήμιο Ιωαννίνων, το University of North Dakota, καθώς επίσης και το University of Michigan.

Οι συμμετέχοντες και συμμετέχουσες από την Ελλάδα και την Αμερική κλήθηκαν να διερευνήσουν το έργο της Σαπφούς και να συλλογιστούν τη σημασία του στη ζωή (τους) σήμερα, αποτυπώνοντας τη «συνομιλία» αυτή μέσα από πρωτότυπα και δημιουργικά έργα.

Στο ίδιο πνεύμα, κλήθηκαν να εξετάσουν το έργο της Σαπφούς μέσα από to έργο άλλων συγγραφέων και καλλιτεχνών από την Αμερική, όπως λ.χ. της Hilda Doolittle (H.D.), και να αναδείξουν τη διαλεκτική τους σχέση.

Για την εξοικείωσή σας με τα έργα, τις προσεγγίσεις που υιοθετήθηκαν και τα μέσα που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν, συστήνεται να διαβάσετε αρχικά τα δύο εισαγωγικά σημειώματα. Η Βασιλική Μήσιου και η Λιάνα Σακελλίου σκιαγραφούν το πλαίσιο μέσα στο οποίο δημιουργήθηκαν τα έργα των φοιτητ(ρι)ών και μας οδηγούν στα μονοπάτια της δημιουργικής διαδικασίας της επανεγγραφής ή/και της δημιουργικής μετάφρασης/μεταφοράς του έργου ενός συγγραφέα.

Στη συνέχεια μπορείτε να προχωρήσετε στη γνωριμία με τα ίδια τα δημιουργικά έργα των φοιτητ(ρι)ών, τα οποία αποτελούν τις δικές τους πρωτότυπες δημιουργίες, συνοδευόμενα από ιδιόχειρα αναστοχαστικά κείμενα.

Κάθε έργο είναι αποτέλεσμα της διάδρασης των φοιτητ(ρι)ών με το έργο της Σαπφούς – δίνεται έμφαση στη διαμεσικότητα και υπογραμμίζεται η αρμονική συνύπαρξη της δημιουργικής γραφής με τη μουσική, τη φωτογραφία, τη ζωγραφική, το υπερκείμενο και το βίντεο.

Ελπίζουμε να απολαύσετε αυτό το διαπολιτισμικό εγχείρημα.
